OUTBOARD ENGINE TRIM & TILT: HOW TO OPTIMIZE BOAT PERFORMANCE

Trim and tilt are critical to getting the most from your outboard engine. Adjusting the engine angle changes the propeller thrust vector, hull attitude, drag and how efficiently your boat moves through the water. Proper outboard engine trim can improve acceleration, top speed, fuel economy, handling and overall performance.

TRIM IN FOR ACCELERATION
When accelerating or getting your boat on plane, trimming the outboard engine in helps direct thrust more horizontally. This pushes the stern up and helps the hull transition onto plane faster. Trim in is particularly useful during acceleration, when carrying heavy loads or when operating in rough water.
TRIM OUT FOR PERFORMANCE
Once on plane, gradually trim the outboard motor out to reduce the amount of hull sitting in the water. Less wetted surface generally means less drag and improved efficiency. The objective isn't maximum trim, it's finding the optimal trim angle where speed increases without excessive RPM, ventilation, or loss of propeller bite.
TRIM & TILT ARE NOT THE SAME
While they are controlled through the same system on many outboard engines, trim and tilt serve different purposes. Tilt raises the engine through its larger range of movement for trailering, storage, or shallow-water operation. Trim provides the finer adjustment needed to optimize the engine's running angle and boat performance while underway.
FIND THE SWEET SPOT
Every hull, propeller, and outboard engine setup responds differently. The ideal trim setting balances thrust, hull lift, drag, stability and propeller grip. Small adjustments can make a noticeable difference in acceleration, fuel consumption, handling and top-end performance.
